ronanthebassman We are all on a mission now. Love every moment of this great mix of old and new. The foundation is the songwriting, and the playing and singing build out a beautiful edifice. Loving it! Favorite track: He Can't Resist a Mystery.

THE HYPNOTIST Everyone is going to the Hypnotist's House And everyone is taking the Hypnotist's word He's a person that's given to Giving people instructions Now he's brave, now he's fair Oh look at his raincoat and his Tiny little fingers If you were you, and I was me We'd go to a party If you were you, and I was me It would be just like life Someone in this room doesn't want to be moved I say somebody in this room doesn't want to be cured Keep your eyes on the moving object Keep your eyes on that moving object If you were you, and I was me We'd go to a party If you were you, and I was me It would be just like life Into the clear blue sky As if we had a choice Into the clear blue sky Just like a memory of morning People round here don't get much sleep 'cos some creep is murdering the Hypnotist's sheep People round here don't get much sleep 'cos some creep is murdering the Hypnotist's sheep Twice I fried a fish, twice it got burned Twice I fried a haddock, twice it got burned Oh, twice I fried a fish, twice it got burned, and Twice I fried a haddock, twice it got burned If you were you, and I was me We'd go to a party If you were you, and I was me It would be just like life Into the clear blue sky As if we had a choice Into the clear blue sky Just like a memory of morning Now, ooh, now Now, ooh, now

THE BUSINESS ENTERPRISE (MY FRIEND JOHN) My friend John had a plan Said he'd never go away again He stayed up every night Just to get the detail right He says, he says, 'when you got a plan Ya gotta put your best shot in' So I heard him out and made a commitment There was apathy in me Oh, nothing seemed worth doing The day to day routine, I had no time to eat So I stayed home all day, a powerhouse inside me I'd sweep the floor, I'd set the clock, And wait the impossible My friend John, don't you know it's hard for me My friend John, I think you got yourself a deal I like the sound of this Business Enterprise I like the sound of this Business Enterprise John was strong, I went along I gave his dream a chance When he turned the fields from brown to green Our heads were full of romance But belief can only move so far You need the killer instinct to go all the way I had to say, 'let's make a new arrangement' My friend John, don't you know it's hard for me My friend John, I think you got yourself a deal I like the sound of this Business Enterprise I like the sound of this Business Enterprise See the brown ground under the green See the brown ground under the green See the brown ground under the green See the brown ground under the green My friend John, don't you know it's hard for me My friend John, I think you got yourself a deal I like the sound of this Business Enterprise I like the sound of this Business Enterprise

Rocket Ship 04:19
ROCKET SHIP I've been watching you from Skateboard Prospekt Waiting for Stephens Day I want you to share my sense of humour When I take your clothes away Getting over this fascination, it's not so hard But picture this situation Can you picture this situation Chorus: You've been building a rocket ship Out on your Daddy's farm You set your sights on Sirius And your keeping those engines warm I love your strangeness I love your charm Keep a seat on that rocket ship for me Little details never fit Into the bigger picture 'till today you’ve never been late And who is that Strange One with ya? Little details just don't jell But I will never sell out, citizen When I pass you in the street, I'm keeping the safest secret, that Chorus I've been watching you from Skateboard Prospekt Counting down to Stephen's Day I want you to share my sense of humour Face to face with this stowaway Getting over this fascination it's not so hard Can you picture this situation Can you picture this situation, that Chorus Keep a seat on that rocket ship for me Keep a seat on that rocket ship for me Keep a seat on that rocket ship for me Keep a seat on that rocket ship for me That rocket ship, that rocket ship That rocket ship, that rocket ship

Insomnia 03:35
INSOMNIA The old soul searchers have eyes of stone. And when they are rooting among their summer duties There's no sleep or snow We watched the cars and tulips grow We recommended doctors to go to And pills to take if you lie awake We made a conversation and lived on either side of it Leaned there for forty evenings, Brown on your side, blood on mine They talked about the weather I refused to let them- how could I refuse The old soul searchers with eyes of stone And when they are rooting among their summer duties There's no sleep or snow We made our conversation and lived on either side of it Leaned there for forty evenings Brown on your side, blood on mine We watched the cars and tulips grow We recommended doctors to go to And pills to take if you lie awake

Damien 04:51
DAMIEN Oh, Damien, you know that I've been living in an unreal world I scratched the lines and made them hard to see Oh, Damien, you know that I've been living all alone They stared as if I wasn't there, made of air Only rain in that fireplace When the big cars all have moved away And the falling pages frittered away Who is sorry now? Go to Hollywood Write that letter soon Chase those ghosts away 'Cos they're the ghosts of your imagination And sometimes Damien you lose track of All the sweet things that you knew so well before Lately I see no shadow at your door (You moved away, far away, far from your door You moved away, far away, far from your door) I see no smoke from your chimney All of the buckets are empty now And all of the bushes are growing wild, oh Damien Go to Hollywood Write that letter soon Oh chase those ghosts away 'Cos they're the ghosts of your imagination Chorus repeat, ad lib and fade

THE POLAR BEAR There is a mad polar bear in Dublin Zoo She walks a ten-foot circle, rocking fro and to Looks real dirty in the Snow Looks real dirty in the Snow I hope she was never free I hope that she never saw the sea That mad polar bear should be our emblem On front of all our government buildings We should pray to her at six o'clock rocking to and fro, yeah We should pray to her at six o'clock rocking to and fro I hope she was never free I hope that she never saw the sea "We are now arrivin' at Sligo station Last stop, passengers in the rear of the train move forward now to reach the platform" "'Tishn't the cold", Granny said. "It's the dampness, it gets into your bones" But tonight the cold is dry cold, Granny Sweeping down from Norway Making the old polar bear feel right at home Making everything else all white and silent too Except for the Dublin freight train The train that roars and rattles as it goes I hope she was never free Looks real dirty in the slow I hope that she never saw the sea All wait in line, its feeding time Zoo keepers throw dead fish to go I hope she was never free I hope that she never saw the sea I hope she was never free I hope that she never saw the sea

Bird 04:50
BIRD The whole world is in the centre of my fist And we know the future We're gonna fly to a desert training camp With a game plan to lose the moves and grooves Your body wants to do automatically A bird came in the room of Muhammad Ali While he was there reclining His eyes were half closed, but he wasn't asleep He was talking with his good friend, Bundini For all I know, not a word of this is true How can you dance without the wind in your hands How can you laugh when your heart is full how can you learn when you always win Mercy for the beaten bull? Bird, a headache in this darkened room Is that what you have become? Just a headache in this darkened room Is that what you have become? What is this act of life? Are we all just trancin' through? what is this act of life? Are we all just trancin' through? I bet I can hold my breath five minutes under water I bet if I hold my breath, we can stay this way for hours I bet if I hold my breath, we can stay this way for ever How can you laugh? How can you move? How can you dance without the wind in your hands How can you laugh when your heart is full How can you learn when you always win Mercy for the beaten bull? A bird flew in the room of Muhammad Ali While he was there reclining His eyes were half closed but he wasn’t asleep He was talking with his good friend, Bundini. For all I know, not a word of this is true.

JUST WHAT THE SUCKER WANTED I'm running through the city With my fingers in my ears Her heart is beating Behind the steering wheel The things I say, I only half believe They are so entangled with the things I need Coming up from my toes, coming up from below I feel I know you, though we've never met before (Keeping the outside out) Youre holding the inside in (Keeping the outside out) Youre always asking why (Keeping the outside out) Holding the inside in (yoiur feet never touch the street) And if it is not enough to feel And if I am stranded out of rhyme And if it is not enough to feel And if I am stranded out of reason Oh, I'm running through the city To slow to know you Your heart is beating behind the controls (The glass is bending how we look, and how we see) You talk I'm a predator, a hungry sucking vampire when I'm asking when, you’re always asking why (Keeping the outside out) You’re holding the inside in (Keeping the outside out) You’re always asking why (Keeping the outside out) Holding the inside in (Your feet never touch the street) And if it is not enough to feel And if I am stranded out of rhyme And if it is not enough to feel And if I am stranded out of reason Time passes slowly When winter comes, the winter run Winter, winter, winter Yeah, you end up giving, giving in the end giving just what the sucker wanted And if it is not enough to feel And if I am stranded out of rhyme And if it is not enough to feel And if I am stranded out of reason

HE CAN'T RESIST A MYSTERY First it rained, and then it froze Perfect conditions for death on the road Never tell Brendan how the story ended He gets his kicks in his radio shack Into the small hours - a lightbulb bare When he hears the sound Of anger blowing thin He trusts in springs and silly things Watch over him Morning storms me They still haven’t caught me Their beds are warm, they dream on They still dream on... These are my problems This is how I solve them There not anybody else’s problems That glow in the sky, like a dawn Is it morning? When he hears the sound Of anger blowing thin He trusts in springs and silly things Watch over him 'Cos he can’t resist a mystery He can’t resist a mystery He goes to see, goes underneath He can’t resist a mystery Ahh dibba dibba dap da daa Ahh dibba dibba dap da daa "Maman Brigette malad, li couche sou do Pawol anpil 'pa leve le mo’" The mambo she dances, silver breaks rock Brigid is sick, she lies on her back All the talk in the world, All the talk in the world Won’t raise the dead When he hears the sound Of anger growing thin He trusts in springs and silly things Watch over him, 'cos He can’t resist a mystery He can’t resist a mystery He goes to see, he goes to see He can’t resist a mystery Ahh dibba dibba dap da daa Ahh dibba dibba dap da daa

about

Those Nervous Animals came together in Sligo in 1981. Forty years later they are about to release their first complete studio album. The Mission Sessions (named for a Georgian House in Union Place where the band were based) contains music from every decade since their first (single) release, Just What The Sucker Wanted in 1984. They did go on to release a series of much celebrated singles (and a mini album, Hyperspace). Massively energetic live, on record TNA created some of the most memorable melodies in Irish rock, including The Business Enterprise (My Friend John). Those Nervous Animals were originally produced by Bill Whelan (of Riverdance fame), and since that time by a series of notable producers – including Donal Lunny, Trevor Knight and Gerry Leonard. This collection is a 50/50 mixture of newly recorded material from lockdown#1 in the summer of 2020 and loving remasters of songs from across four decades. The Mission Sessions is released in a limited edition 180-gram vinyl.
